TULSA, Okla. — A long-awaited deployment of some 2,600 Oklahoma Army National Guard troops to Iraq will continue during the next two weeks.
Col. Pat Scully, a spokesman for the Guard, said some of the troops began shipping out Tuesday from El Paso, Texas, after training at nearby Camp McGregor, N.M., since the end of October.
From El Paso, according to Scully, troops will be flown to Kuwait, where they will spend two to three weeks getting ready for their mission in Iraq.
At this point, Scully said, it’s unknown where the troops will be sent in Iraq, but he noted that the full 45th Brigade won’t stay together in one place.
This is the largest mobilization of the 45th Infantry Brigade since the Korean War. The brigade will be in Iraq for about eight months before returning to Oklahoma.
