NAHA, Japan — Prosecutors have released a 21-year-old Marine who was arrested Feb. 18 on suspicion of trespassing into a private residence in Nago, police said Tuesday.
The Naha District Public Prosecutors Office later said it decided not to file criminal charges against Cpl. Shawn Jake and freed him Monday night after the Marine offered an apology and paid compensation to the victim.
Jake, who belongs to the Marine Corps’ Camp Schwab, was arrested at around 4:25 a.m. Feb. 18 when he was found passed out on a sofa in the residence. He was drunk at the time, police said.
He has told Japanese investigators that he does not remember how he entered the residence.
The U.S. military has imposed a curfew on all of its military and civilian personnel in Okinawa since Feb. 20. The curfew is in response to the arrest of Marine Staff Sgt. Luther Hadnott of Camp Courtney on allegations that he raped a 14-year-old girl Feb. 10.
