GREENBELT, Md. — A soldier from Maryland who pleaded guilty to receiving and selling guns that he smuggled out of Iraq has been sentenced to 21 months in prison.
Twenty-eight-year-old Leonard S. Lockley of Bowie was sentenced in U.S. District Court on Monday.
According to court documents, a witness in 2003 saw Lockley placing four disassembled AK-47-style rifles into a large black metal chest with a false bottom. The witness said Lockley told him that he had the chest made and was using it to send the weapons to the United States.
That same year, another witness saw Lockley with at least four weapons and said Lockley told him that he had purchased the weapons from an Iraqi and planned to use the box to ship them home.
