UK Opens Iraq War InquiryNovember 24, 2009
Deutsche Presse-Agentur
LONDON -- A far-reaching public inquiry into the political and military decisions that led to the 2003 invasion of Iraq opened in Britain today.
The inquiry will hear evidence from a range of politicians and military leaders, including former prime minister Tony Blair.
Its chairman, John Chilcot, said Tuesday that the inquiry had a "mountain of documentary evidence" to go through, covering the period between 2001 and 2009.
The proceedings, which will be televised, are the first to investigate in detail the political decisions leading up to the invasion.
Crucial questions include the issue of the legality of the invasion and the use by the government of intelligence material claiming that Iraq's former leader, Saddam Hussein, held weapons of mass destruction.
