Authorities in New Mexico suspect that excessive alcohol led to the death of a Camp Pendleton-based Marine who was visiting family over the weekend.
Pfc. Shirelle L. Jones, 27, was found dead in her brother’s home about 7:30 a.m. Monday after emergency personnel responded to the house, Albuquerque Police Officer Nadine Hamby said.
Jones had consumed large amounts of alcohol during a party at the home and at some point passed out, Hamby said.
“There was no physical sign of trauma. There were no signs of foul play,” she added. An autopsy was done, but the cause of death was pending a final report from the medical examiner’s office.
An ammunition technician, Jones had enlisted in the Corps on March 26, 2007, and was assigned to Ammunition Company, 1st Supply Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 15, 1st Marine Logistics Group, officials said in a news release. Her military awards included the National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.
