NORFOLK, Va. — A Navy lieutenant commander has bas been sentenced to more than three years in federal prison for possessing child pornography.

Prosecutors had asked for a nearly six-year sentence for Lt. Cmdr. John J. Hall.

On Friday, U.S. District Judge Mark Davis gave Hall 40 months instead. He cited Hall’s unblemished record and achievements in uniform as reasons for the shorter sentence.

Hall pleaded guilty last summer and admitted he’d had child pornography on his home computer while he lived in Virginia Beach between November 2006 and October 2007. Court records say a search of his computer revealed about 288 images of child pornography.
