A sailor found not guilty of a fatal shooting at court-martial Thursday will return to work aboard the aircraft carrier Harry S. Truman, a Navy official said.
Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Braxton Smith, 23, was accused of killing a man outside a nightclub in Jacksonville, Fla., in 2007. His four-day court-martial at Naval Station Mayport, Fla., ended Thursday in an acquittal on the charge of murder, said Mike Maus, a spokesman for Naval Air Forces Atlantic.
Smith also was acquitted in the assault of a second man who was shot during the same incident.
Braxton had not been in custody before the trial and was assigned to Naval Air Forces Atlantic, a Navy spokesman said.
Braxton’s home of record is Jacksonville. He enlisted in December 2006, and Truman was his first assignment, Navy records show.
