The chance to volunteer for a different career field is over.
About 290 noncommissioned officers will be involuntarily retrained into different career fields as the Air Force works to rebalance its NCO force. Selected airmen who decline to be retrained will be separated from the service at the end of their terms of enlistment.
This fall, 714 staff sergeants and technical sergeants volunteered for the annual NCO Retraining Program. But that was 289 short of what the Air Force needs to fill its undermanned Air Force Specialty Codes.
Phase I of the NCORP, which sought volunteers to fill 1,003 spots in critical skills specialties, ended in late October.
Now, the Air Force is moving on to Phase II, which selects qualified E-5s and E-6s from overmanned career fields to fill the shorthanded fields.
