CHARLESTON, S.C. — A new military unit at an Air Force base in South Carolina will take over administrative duties for a number of military commands next month.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Monday the 628th Air Wing will essentially serve as the ‘landlord’ for Charleston Air Force Base, the Charleston Naval Consolidated Brig and about 50 other military commands.
The unit will handle items such as building and grounds services, supply and civil engineering and public works. Officials say the joint basing program will save millions of dollars over the next 20 years.
Officials say the consolidation could help Charleston avoid cuts in future base realignments. The Charleston Navy Base and Shipyard were closed following a realignment proposed in 1993.
