BENTON, Ill. — An Army veteran who authorities say threatened a shooting rampage at a Veterans Affairs hospital in southern Illinois appears ready to change his plea in federal court.
Mark Harmon, 29, pleaded not guilty last month to a charge of attempted possession of a firearm on federal property with the intent to commit a crime.
A change-of-plea hearing has been set for Jan. 15 in Benton. One of Harmon’s public defenders declined to comment Tuesday to The Associated Press about her client’s intentions.
Authorities say Harmon was found with a handgun in October outside the VA hospital in Marion after calling a nurse and saying he planned to “fill that place with lead.” Authorities say they found a loaded handgun, a magazine and 13 loose rounds of ammunition in Harmon’s truck.
He’s jailed without bond.
