About 250 airmen from a unit of the Iowa Air National Guard are returning home from Iraq this week.
The airmen are members of the 132nd Fighter Wing, which arrived in Iraq this fall for a 60-day tour of duty. The unit was involved in more than 1,000 hours of combat flying with F-16 aircraft.
Its mission was to watch over convoys and patrols, perform reconnaissance and surveillance, and counter enemy rockets, mortars and improvised explosive devices, said Maj. Michael Wunn, a National Guard spokesman at Camp Dodge.
Wunn said Tuesday the airmen would return over the next few days. The largest group will be home for Christmas, although the final group won’t return home until Saturday, the day after Christmas.
The exact arrival times of the unit aren’t being disclosed for security reasons, Wunn said. Family and friends will greet the returning airmen, but there will not be a public ceremony, he said.
