SAN DIEGO — A senior Coast Guard official says he understands why public confidence in the agency may be shaken after a Coast Guard vessel struck a smaller boat during a Christmas parade in San Diego Bay, killing an 8-year-old boy.
Rear Adm. Joseph Castillo said Wednesday that a Coast Guard investigation will take months to complete.
Castillo, commander of the Coast Guard's 11th district, declined to answer questions about Sunday night's crash.
Witnesses, including the boy's father, said the Coast Guard vessel was speeding across the crowded bay during the annual parade, which features dozens of boats decked in holiday lights.
The National Transportation Safety Board and San Diego Harbor Police are also investigating.
