NEW YORK — As temperatures fall and waterways begin to freeze, five Coast Guard cutters have begun icebreaking operations on the busy Hudson River.
The cutters will ply the river from the New York City to Albany, helping to keep the waterway open to commercial traffic until the season ends in mid-March.
The Coast Guard says an average of 300 commercial vessels travel the Hudson during the winter months, transporting more than 5 million barrels of petroleum products, including home heating oil.
Information on the Hudson River’s ice conditions are updated by daily Coast Guard Auxiliary flights and transmitted to vessels using the waterway.
