The command master chief of Carrier Air Wing 17 was fired Monday for fraternizing with a first-class petty officer, Navy officials said.
CMDCM (AW/SS) Donald Engstrom was relieved by the air wing’s commander, Capt. Andrew Whitson, on Monday after receiving a non-judicial punishment.
A Navy spokesman declined to provide details about the NJP.
The removal decision was reviewed and affirmed Wednesday by Rear Adm. Ted Branch, commander of Carrier Strike Group 1. The air wing is based at Naval Air Station Oceana, Va.
Navy officials declined to say whether they took disciplinary action against the female petty officer accused in the fraternization.
