has DU been infiltrated by 'freepers' and religious nuts? Some of the post in GD and GDP seem to be more than favorable with such an issue as a evangelical scientist heading a Government office. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x8518616There are also a lot of of support for Israel's robbing of land that they think they have some divine right too. To them, Israel never ever does anything wrong. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x6012906I am sure these people would be ok with an Israel strike on Iran too. Yep, the more I scan the more freep shit I see: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=132&topic_id=8518837&mesg_id=8518837

1. Confirmation bias possibly?

Not saying you're not right. I haven't been around enough to tell, but I think the first thing one needs to do when they notice a trend is to try to rule out confirmation bias. Is there really an uptick in the expression of non-progressive ideas, or is it that you're just noticing them more?

As far as Francis Collins being appointed head of the NIH...
While I certainly think he's more than a touch balmy when it comes to religion, I also think he'll do a competent job. As one commenter on Pharyngula noted, at least he does the research first and then drapes god all over it. If you have any evidence to indicate he'll let his religious beliefs stand in the way of good national health and research policies, I'd love to see them because I'd love to be able to oppose the guy.

4. If there's an infiltration, I don't think it's new.

I have the authors of one of those on ignore and I haven't updated that list since the aftermath of Prop 8.
I'd guess that it's more monkey-see, monkey-do among existing DUers who have never given their bigotries a second thought. Remember the 'under God' lawsuit in December? There were some threads on it full of Christian DUers venting their hatred by comment and rec.
Progressive isn't a blanket term and one of the side-effects of the President's popularity is that more homophobes, misogynists, and religious bigots feel welcome in the big tent.

5. It goes through cycles. Around election time you get a lot of new members who are obvious.

General Discussion has many right of center Democrats, just look at all the Union bashing that went on when GM was asking for money.
