| You know what this whole defense of the indefensible behavior of the Pope reminds me of? |
|
How Catholics behaved in WWII. When they deliberately ignored what was going on in Germany and Eastern Europe to the Jews and the Church's subtle hand in endorsing it by totally ignoring it. Honestly, I really am astonished by how so many people can continue to defend the Vatican/Pope when its clear from the evidence that they behaved in a highly immoral and unethical way and don't really give a damn. The pope is infallable. People really do believe that shit, don't they?

Don't bring it up though--you may wind up being accused of anti-Catholic bigotry and have to put up with even more red herrings and strawmen.

| 2. It's just so disappointing. |

Here you have (supposedly) completely moral, intelligent, progressive Catholics, and all they can do is scream "ANTI-CATHOLIC BIGOTRY" whenever anyone tries to discuss the issue. Basically I think what it comes down to is the church has had 2 millenia to perfect their PR message and keep the flock in line. They don't have all the weapons for this they used to (burning, imprisoning, etc.) but there is still a remarkable degree of control over even the more progressive and enlightened members because above all else, they appear to be HIGHLY uneasy with the idea of going to any other Christian denomination... simply because they don't have the label "Catholic." You won't find many liberal Catholics admit it, but I think most Catholics have one hell of a superiority complex.

| 6. Agree. Sad state of affairs. Venture into the Catholic group... |

I keep hoping to see that thread title everyone so wants to see...
But alas...
You know, something like this: "WAKE UP Catholics - this is getting embarrassing - we have work to do NOW!"
Everyday I venture in there - everyday I'm disappointed.

assuming people keep assaulting the church. But there's a long way to go before their kneejerk defense stops
