Christians believe that any persecution they're not engaging in is persecution against them.
Expand that a bit and you realize that a refusal to attack one group is a de facto attack on Christianity.

i know what you're referring to and it's not an anomaly. it's become a very common (ir)rationalization.
you can see it in almost every ground zero mosque thread.
