My bf that has always questioned religion, calls himself agnostic, has called himself atheist when talking to religious people. He challenges others religious conviction, but then last night tells me my anger is directed to Jesus. Why hate Jesus, he stood for good. Why read the bible and read the bad parts. "if Jesus wrote the bible" the message would be good. He is an intelligent perosn but sometimes I just don't understand. "Why do you fault the man for what people have written?" He tends to repeat "he gave us the golden rule how can that be bad?" How can you fault that? So there was no morality before Jesus. If there is book with good and bad, and we pick the good only, isn't it because we inherently know good fro bad. Isn't it more an evolutionary thing. But he will argue with his Dad and sent him a website where you can buy a "bag of jesus" a discount prices. I just don't get it. Oh yea, and also "I love atheist too much"
Could this be just residual effects of his catholic school? Also, he has never actually read the bible. Not that I have read the entire thing but I know I have read more of it then he. Just needed some place to vent. Thanks you godless Fs!

| 1. Your boyfriend is mistaken |

when he attributes The Golden Rule to Jesus. That rule predates Jesus and is not in the Bible.

I guess his heart is in the right place. I think he was trying to say just look at the message, not where it came from. Not how many ideas are stolen.Blahblah- I just can't do that. There is too much wrong, I see more harm than good. He even accused me of using "talking points"!UGH! I guess I am just more angry then he is these days. Maybe I need his meds...he used to be much angrier.

| 3. It definitely predates Jesus, but the rule (if not that EXACT wording) is in the bible |
|
Matthew 7:12:
So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets.
Luke 6:31:
Do unto others as you would have them do to you. (New International Version)
I'd say that counts as being 'in the bible'

Because it assumes that all of the old testament is invalid as well. I effing hate this double standard that Jesus freaks have...They talk about how much they "respect" Jews because Jesus was one, out of one side of their mouths while constantly acting like their morality and believes are non-existent.

he doesn't even claim to believe in gawd. I just think he is trying to say that we should just be good, and to take that message out of it. But I can't take that and leave the rest. But I do sometimes think the brainwashing isn't completely gone. Also, I think it is because that is all the knowledge he really knows of religion. He is the LEAST discriminatory person I know. Sometime his attempts at fairness annoy me. I maybe made him sound worse than he is. I just sometimes don't get his thinking.

| 7. sounds like he's parroting some beliefs he grew up around |

I've found a lot of friends that say they are agnostic still struggle to discard things they were taught as kids...and that stuff about Jesus being the center of morality is one of those things that gets ingrained to the point were its not questioned. I suspect he just needs to have some of his assumptions challenged so he can re examine why he thinks certain ways.

funny thing is he is usually the one doing the challenging. It is only with me that he even says such things. Sometimes I think he just likes to make me crazy!

I used to teach middle school. On the first day, I would play this sketch for my students. If any of my students would give me a hard time during the year, I'd stop a moment and say, "Wait -- are you here for an argument?"
Everybody cracks up and we move on.
Now I'm not saying that would work with your BF...
