Another aspect that lures people into religion & causes them to abandon critical thinking in my opinion is the perceived personal reward, family pressure (The fear of being cast out of the group) & fear of death.
However, you nailed it by not only mentioning science but the history of religions & how they have evolved...Which for me pointed straight to nothing but a human created belief system based off nothing but the human imagination. Because each belief system differs from culture to culture...And where cultures interact you can see if reflected in the beliefs systems. This is what made me turn an eye toward science. The most powerful aspect of science for me is not so much what we know but HOW we know what we know! Which makes what we know much more powerful!
