Any fan's of Dan Simmons' Hyperion series?

A movie though? I find it difficult to believe they could manage that and have it be any good.

3. The first two books are among the best SF ever written

The last two books are utter shite.

I can't imagine a movie made out of them. Would probably have to be a miniseries to be any good.

5. The Hyperion books read like 6 great episodes of the Twilight Zone

I used to make my wife weep just by telling her about "Rachel's Story". That's some pretty damn good writing, when someone can be affected by your story by not even reading it.

I don't know what the hell Simmons was thinking with those Endymion books. They honestly read like they were written by someone else, someone without a clue as to what the Hyperion books were about or even how to write.

His books were way too long winded and tangential. He had a serious problem getting to the point. Either that, or he was getting paid by the word. :) He needed an editor, though.

That said, I like his writing style, and I thought the "Shrike" was pretty cool.

My greatest memory of the awful Endymion books was a description of a banquet that was something like five pages long, including laborious descriptions of the clothing of characters we never see or hear from again.

11. I thought the first book was pretty good.

It was all setup. A bunch of characters meet, we learn their interesting back stories, then the book ends with them wandering off to a big cliffhanger finale. Only the second book failed to deliver on the promise of the first. It seemed clear to me that the author had great ideas for the characters, but didn't know what he wanted to do with them, how to solve the cliffhanger. Sort of like the second part of "The Best of Both Worlds" STTNG episode, as an analogy.

I only read the first of the last two books, I didn't think it was that bad.
