I'm trying to remember a story in which a robot is elected Pope.
It all takes place from the point of view of folks waiting for the conclave, and at the end of story, the new Pope emerges, and it's a robot... does this ring a bell with anyone?

1. "Good News From the Vatican" by Robert Silverberg.........
I have never read it, but it sounds good.

4. ah, I tried 'pope conclave robot'

which didn't work too well, but 'pope vatican robot' finds it...

I see it won the Nebula award for Best Short Story in 1971, so I probably read it in an anthology of Nebula winners...

5. As soon as I read the first post I thought "Silverberg"
But I couldn't find the story. :( Good detective work on that one :)

I remember reading the story, but it was probably about 20 years ago. I used to be a big fan of Silverberg, but I haven't read anything of his lately.
