Is it just me or is Star Trek: DS9 more resonant now...

...than when it was on the air. It deals a lot with war and with deceit and questions about civil liberties. I love the show and now it makes even more sense than before.

1. I definitely agree

It was always my favourite Trek incarnation. I think many people just didn't 'get' DS9's complex social and political storylines at the time and it went underappreciated. I also loved it because it had the best actors of all the Trek series as well as the most complex characters.

2. You are right

DS9 was very well done, and after watching the entire series now on DVD I have come to really appreciate it.

During the series run, I recall being turned off with all the 'glory be to the prophets' religious carp of the Bajorans, especially once Sisko himself stopped calling them 'wormhole aliens' - missing a couple episodes here and there with DS9 could mean missing a major story arc or some vital character development, so I got a little lost after awhile. Truly the 'soap opera' of the Treks, isn't it?

Well, upon viewing the entire series from season 1-7, I must admit, DS9 was superb. Extremely well-fleshed out (and huge) supporting cast, interesting story arcs, great acting, great writing. Even the "filler" episodes have their redeeming qualities. Yes, even the ferengi episodes - after all the melodrama, a little humor fit just perfectly.

4. I just saw the final ep for the 1st season:

"In the Hands of the Prophets".
And I was getting chills becuase of the story: school on DS9 is teaching about the wormhole without alluding to it being the "Celestial Temple" and some fanatic right-wing religious leader starts a ruckus. She's also plotting to kill one of the other contenders for the position of "Kai".
Seems the writers were channeling the personality of the GOP of today with that episode. The evil religious leader is, of course, falsely pious and quite a santimonious wench.

Magnificent episode. And that was in the first season (which is usually the shakiest season for Star Trek series, as the actors and writers are still getting a feel for the show)

5. Ds9 had the most solid first season of any Trek.

That episode, "Duet", "Emissary", "Captive Pursuit". But, I was not thinking about that episode. You are right. It does hit the nail on the head there.

7. I saw "Duet" during its first run and realized halfway through

the episode that I was watching something great.

My other favorites from DS9 were "The Visitor" and "In the Pale Moonlight" and a few others whose title escapes me.

6. Your not the only one

DS9 pretty much prepared me for what happened after 9/11. The two part episodes Homefront/Pardise Lost predicted how a free society could turn into an authoritative nightmare overnight. The lesson that the episode was trying to impart was the enemies wants us fighting against each other. The last election proves to me people haven't realized that lesson and need to be watching Trek at the very least. :)

It is the most applicable Trek series to what is going on.
