Post Apocalyptic Book Suggestions.

I'm in the mood to read a good post-apocalypse story. I tend to like Golden age/"traditional" sci fi more than the post-modern, cyberpunk, steampunk, newer style stuff. Any suggestions for good ones?

PS Just finished reading a pre-apocalypse story. It's called "The Republican party Platform".

1. "A Canticle For Leibowitz" is considered one of the classics.

I must admit, I read it and didn't quite see what all the fuss was about, but it does also date from the Golden Age. Or, at any rate it's definitely pre "x-punk"

3. Lucifer's Hammer, by Larry Niven.

It also includes the part where the apocalypse actually happens, but at least half the book is post-apocalypse. And it's a pretty long book.

4. Earth Abides, George R. Stewart

First book of this sort I ever read. I should re-read it. It has been a long, long time.

One of my favorite books.

Emergence (written in spare shorthand style...very interesting)

7. The Postman

much, much better than the movie, which was a great disappointment. Can't remember the author.

9. David Brin.

The Postman is the best of his works.

(As for the movie... only the Tom Petty cameo saved it from utter trashdom.)

8. Robert McCammon's post-apocolyptic novel "Swan Song"

is pretty good. Perhaps not the equal of "The Stand" but close.

10. You might enjoy "Wolf and Iron" and "Time Storm" by

Great book.

15. Yes, and rather unsettling.

It was so close to real life. But I agree, it's a good read.

It gives you a lot to think about. Perhaps the main thing being, Is this the kind of world we want?

Updated to add 2nd paragraph and use a world other than "disturbing" because blindpig had beat me to it.

16. Oryx and Crake was great...here are some more....

Harvest by Robert Charles Wilson- not really apocalyptic but sort of ( helpful, aren't I?)- then there is always On The Beach and Alas Babylon and one of my personal favorites, The Forge Of God by Greg Bear.

I don't know why I love that kind o'stuff but I do.
