Ian McDonald's River of Gods is quite good....

I'm about halfway through it. The story line develops rather slowly, but that's because it's told in a series of vignettes about each of several key characters, so the focus is largely on character and setting development early on.

I'm particularly impressed with the language and style. The author's voice comes through beautifully.

"Hearts, Hands and Voices" and "Speaking in Tongues" are both excellent.
