Looking for a book (for my brother)

I posted about this in the Lounge a while back, but I just realized this was the place to do it.

My brother read a sci-fi book a long time ago -- probably in the '70s or '80s -- that I'm hoping someone here will recognize.

Unfortunately, I have a very limited amount of information.

Apparently, the main character becomes aware that he is being used by the people among whom he lives, and over the course of the book discovers that he is "just a head." The few books I've learned about that sort of fit this minimal description are not the book he is trying to remember (one of the suggestions I got was for a Philip K. Dick book).

Anyway, I don't know why he wants to reread it, but he is going through something extremely difficult, and I would like to find the book if I can, just to offer a distraction. I will entertain all suggestions and send them on to him with synopses that I will look for online.

Does this bare bones storyline mean anything to any of you who are much more knowledgeable than I about science fiction?

1. Is there any chance you can

get a little more information on this book? It certainly does not ring a bell with me, and I've been reading s-f for a very long time now. Of course, there are many more books out there that I've not read.
