BSG Moving To NBC?
http://www.battlestargalacticasite.com/2006/10/bsg_to_nbc_can_it_survive.php

Word has begun to circulate that NBC's acquisition of 'Battlestar Galactica' is in the "waiting for the ink to dry" phase at this moment, and an official announcement could be days away.

The question is: will NBC be tolerant of the quasi-political themes that BSG seems to take from the most controversial page of world events? In recent episodes, BSG has examined the flip side of insurgency, terrorists as freedom-fighters, and any number of edgy themes.

Gods damn it! Mark my words, if this is true BSG is as good as dead. Sci-fi shows generally have a very loyal core fan-base, but they cannot generate the kind of numbers needed to keep them viable in a prime-time slot on a major network. So I give it 1 1/2 seasons, the second half of season three and season four. Season three will not do as well as expected so they will tweak the show for season four. The core fans will bolt for season four and they'll shit it down.

The show will also need to be toned down dramatically. No more "frack" because we all know it translates to fuck. No more borderline profanities either. Homogenized bullshit is what we'll get. I'm already pissed off and I don't even know if the rumors are true.

...oh, and I enjoy "Studio 60". Doesn't any show get more than a couple of episodes to prove itself anymore?

Jay

1. It is worrisome
This was a subject of conversation a few months back. Generally if the ratings are there NBC might not put much pressure if any to tone anything down. But as you point out it may be difficult for BSG to garner the kind of ratings required for that sort of protection (perhaps even to stay on air) on a network like NBC.

2. General Electric is not to be trusted!
They cancelled Donahue, despite having the highest ratings in MSNBC, because GE wanted to cheer lead Bush's war on Iraq.

3. Why Would Sci Fi Channel Get Rid Of Their Most Popular Show?

This makes no sense, I hope it doesn't happen. I guess NBC is offering a lot of money for it?

4. Doesn't NBC Universal own SciFi?
Maybe that's why the rumours have been around since a few months ago. I don't know... I hope that the rumours aren't true. I just don't see BSG retaining its edginess and gutsy story lines in a more mainstream venue. I guess we all want BSG to be appreciated by more people but like everything else, its a 2 edged sword - there'll be more people to find something to be offend by and I'm not sure that NBC will allow RDM to continue with his vision... Maybe they will. Judging from most of the stuff on the networks, I wouldn't be too optimistic.

5. Sci-Fi is part of the NBC family
NBC, MSNBC, USA, BRAVO, SCI-FI

They have moved shows around before, but nothing as high profile. I've noticed that they're airing the season premiere of BSG this year on USA and BRAVO as well. I hadn't heard any recent news of them moving it to the big network, but if NBC wanted to, I think they could.

I'm sure the people in charge of programming at SCI-FI were this to happen would have a collective 'shit' moment. Their cornerstone for their network gone. That'd be a big loss for them.

6. I agree it's not a good idea
It'd be better to get the Sci-Fi channel into more homes, than put it on Network.

As long as they keep it out of the 8pm slot they should be fine with Frack and whatnot. Heck Veronica Mars said Frack twice on her season premiere.

And if it fails, they could always move it back to Sci-Fi.

Personally I think they should move all sci-fi programming to the sci-fi network and let CBS become the crime/legal network, ABC the woman/romance network, and NBC the comedy/dateline network, FOX the lowbrow network, CW the teen network....etc.

8. They'd move to CBS
CBS would have to trade their monday comedy shows to NBC in return for the three Law and Order series.

9. CBS Has Comedy Shows?
Like what, "Golden Girls" and "Murder She Wrote"? Stuff like that? Cereal, CBS is so lame I have no idea what's on it other than CSI.

10. I think they are the only comedy shows they have
Monday for CBS is...The Class, How I Met Your Mother (?), Two and a half men, New Adventures of Old Christine...then probably a CSI.

CBS has gotten a little better, though I don't really watch much on it. I'm giving their new show Jericho a try.

11. Ooops,...
now that you mention it, I've been watching Jericho too. I DVR it so I had completely forgotten it was on CBS. It does feel CBSy though, doesn't it?

12. It's that low contrast grainy look
CBS is so low contrast that everything always seems sort of CBSy and fuzzy on it. I prefer how NBC looks, ABC a close second. I think how they have their settings definately affects the feel of some shows.

15. I Do Enjoy The Show Though.
I'm sure everyone will get a bit more comfortable as the show goes on. I just keep waiting for a big pink helicopter to come rescue everyone.

16. Galactica Rumors Squashed

SCI FI Channel and its parent network, NBC, put to rest fan rumors that SCI FI's original series Battlestar Galactica will make the move to NBC. "There is no truth to this rumor," a SCI FI spokesperson told SCI FI Wire.

The rumor has appeared on fans sites such as the Battlestar Galactica Site and been picked up by other entertainment news sites. "Word has begun to circulate that NBC's acquisition of Battlestar Galactica is in the 'waiting-for-the-ink-to-dry' phase at this moment, and an official announcement could be days away," the Battlestar Galactica Site said.

Although I still say that Battlestar Galactica is the only science fiction show in current production that could survive on network television.
It's done so much to transcend what we traditionally call "science ficiton" that most of the people who normally don't watch sci-fi because if it's "geekness"
would probably ignore those aspects while watching BG.

18. They should do what USA did with "Monk"
Have the first run episodes on Sci-fi and then rerun them again on NBC.

Seems like a win-win for both networks.
