Who's Psyched for Earthsea and Battlestar Galactica on Sci Fi Channel? |
|
Man, I can't wait!
I hope they do a good job w/ Earthsea, haven't seen much about it except the commercials.
And I'm way excited they went ahead w/ the BG series! The miniseries was one of the most pleasant surprises on TV in a long time. It far exceeded my expectations!

1. I'm not familiar with Earthsea |
|
I haven't read much Ursula K. Le Guin, I usually shy away from straight Fantasy. Although I almost always enjoy the short stories she has published in Asimov's. But I have never read Earthsea novels, and I probably will not watch the movie, not that I think it'll be bad (I have no idea) but I just wont make the investment in TV time.
When the BG miniseries was announced I liked a lot of what the producers said about what makes quality science fiction but I thought they were changing what BG was to much and should've just created their own universe.
However, I enjoyed the miniseries and while I still agree that they've changed what BG was fundamentally I thought it was good TV and I'm looking forward to watching the new series.

No thanks, I will give it a pass. Give me shiny robots with ring modulated voices please. :-)
Don't know anything about EarthSea. I don't think much of the SF channel but maybe something good will sneak through.

3. The shiny metal Cylons are still around... |
|
and bigger and badder than ever. Even the old Cylons you know and love have made "cameo" appearances.
I was a huge fan of the original series, but upon seeing it with adult eyes I have to admit it hasn't aged well.
On the other hand, I was very pleasantly surprised by the new BG. It's kept so many of the great design elements from the first show while fixing things that obviously needed a refit (e.g., the Cylon Raiders, which are completely automated now and no longer require three combat-impaired robots to fly).

4. OK, I might give it a chance |
|
It will mean breaking my oath to never watch another SF original because of their cancellation of Farscape.
Maybe I can justify it since they did throw a bone and I did watch the Farscape miniseries and I do sometimes watch a bit of Tripping the Rift.
But I still think they are kind of a sucky, everything that can be bad, skiffy type of SF channel. :-)
I mean those original movies they air on the weekends. Phew.

most of the crappy movies they show someone else made. I think their Dune movies were superior, and I enjoyed their version of "Riverworld."

7. True about a lot of them, but |
|
I read an article a while back about how they have developed a formula and methodology to grind out their own original versions of these types of movies for about a million a piece.
I just am so tired of the evil alien, prehistoric, monster whatever that eats people and then gets killed in the end action movie dressed up as SF.
I don't expect high art but a little intelligence would go a long ways.
I only watched the first Dune movie. I absolutely despised the dialogue that the so-called writer put into those movies. Bad, bad, bad writing. And the plot changes were pretty insulting and stupid too. The effects looked good and that was about it.
I didn't watch Riverworld at all because I loved the books too much to see what those hacks would do. I did clue in that they had once again, americanized and dumbed it down.
I guess, when you get right down to it, I think 99% of what SFC does sucks. Farscape was a fluke and they killed it because it made their other shows look like the drivel they are.

6. Not me, they are both gonna totally suck ass |
|
Battlestar Galactica is gonna suck because the miniseries sucked.
And Earthsea's gonna suck because they're combining books and fucking Kristen Kreuk is in it. That's all I need to know.
Stupid Farscape/MST3k-cancelling, craptastic movie making Sci-Fi channel.

8. the Battlestar mini-series |
|
really disappointed me. They blew off the originals and went for skin and sex. Totally pissed me off. Richard Hatch had a great layout for the new series but they decided cylon sex kittens who humped everyone before the destroying Caprica was the way to go.
Sorry, I'm a big fan of the originals.
