At least this isn't the umpteenth remake of something.

2. I'm both excited and nervous.

It may just suck like every other so-called sci-fi/horror movie lately. It certainly has my curiosity piqued though.

3. I was SO excited before "Independence Day" came out

But because I love hard science fiction, it was a let-down for me.

I didn't want to sound too harsh as I know that some people really love the movie. For me it was a major disappointment. Good special effects and some lovable actors, but the story seemed (to me) to be nothing more than a compendium of all the sci-fi clichés that preceded it.

What they call an homage to older sci-fi I call a ripoff. Plus, the movie was just flat out stupid. Emmerich and Devlin are great at staging good scenes for special effects, but they couldn't write a good story to go with those scenes to save their lives. Look at Godzilla for further evidence of their suckitude. How does anyone fuck up that formula? x(

7. It isn't a remake?

After watching the trailer I thought it was a Godzilla movie. Still, the trailer was pretty cool. I might go see this.

8. Nope, totally original.

J.J. Abrams said he got the idea while in Japan looking at Godzilla toys with his son. He figured America had no monster like that of it's own (King Kong didn't fit the bill, he figured) so he created one, and this is it.

So, the spirit is from the big G, but the movie itself is a total original.

10. No one knows yet.

The trailer gives just the smallest glimpse of something...big. And from what I've been reading there's a lot of smaller creatures running around too. In the trailer you can hear a medical person yell, "We've got a bite!" right before they cut to a woman behind a screen who appears to be inflating at a rapid pace. :evilgrin:

11. Okay, I'm cautiously optimisitic, but...

The idea of a full-length movie shot in the You-Are-There POV makes me a little nervous. As far as I know, this technique has never been used effectively on the big screen, at least not for such an extended period, and I'm not sure that a giant monster movie is apt to be the first to get it right.

But I'll say this: at least they're not using the technique to simulate a first-person POV (which is always terrible) and are instead positing an actual camera on the scene.

13. LOL! That's hardly a vote of confidence!

I recently spotted the famous "Worst Movie of All Time," Plan 9 From Outer Space on sale for $9.99 in a DVD bin at a local video store. Along with that wonderful dreadful film were about a dozen copies of The Blair Witch Project @ $5.99.

Hmm...


Anyway, given the differing scope of the two films (up her nostrils vs. running around New York) I'm not sure that TBWP can be cited as precedent!
