| 2. I would say RIP but . . . |
|
I imagine that the discorporate Arthur is doing anything but resting. Probably touring the outer Magellanic Clouds before heading off to the Andromeda Galaxy or some such . . .
This man had a truly massive impact on our world, whether one reads science fiction or not. He will be missed.

| 3. I first saw the news in the DU Lounge and |
|
here's what I posted there:
Success To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to ear the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a better place, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even on life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. Attributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson but may be by Bessie Stanley, 1904
I think Mr Clarke met at least a couple of those criteria, he'll be missed.

| 4. As with many, my first entry into the fiction of Arthur C. Clarke was 2001: A Space Odyssey |
|
Then, I moved on the Rendezvous with Rama. He set a high standard that I found difficult to match in other writers.
As an aside, I wish that I'd known that he was gay when I was growing up in the '70's. I think it would have influenced me and many generations positively.
