The less drawn I am to superhero comics. Dunno why, I just think I'm outgrowing them.
I used to be an X-Men fan until I was required to buy like 10 books a month just to follow the main story. Whatever, Marvel.
My favorite all-time comics are probably Dawn, Preacher and Sandman. I love Dawn because I think Lisner is one of the best comic artists ever, and I adore how he draws women...his women are curvy and actually look healthy instead of the skeleton-thin bodybuilders with ginormous boobs that seem to be popular in comics today. I also love the writing of those books...it's just too funny that God and Lucifer were feuding ex-lovers. I liked Preacher because that dude had hillbilly Red State America down to an artform. Which is funny because I think the writer is British. :P Sandman, what needs to be said about Sandman? Gaiman is one of the literary geniuses of our age.
The only comic I still follow on a month-to-month basis is Strangers in Paradise.

2. I collected them as a teen, still have every issue of the titles I liked |
|
I prefered Amazing Spiderman, Peter Parker the Spectacular Spiderman, X Men, Avengers, the Incredible Hulk, and Dreadstar. Of the indies I liked DNA Agents and Captain Paragon (which may have lasted all of three issues).

That was one I forgot to mention. Another truly outstanding example of the form. Starlin's finest work, I must say. I also forgot to mention how much I love Knights of the Dinner Table.
My girlfriend thinks it's cute I am a comic book geek. When I lived very far away from comic book stores, I used to have my favorite titles shipped to me every other month.
Now I live near the Laughing Ogre in Columbus, Ohio, and I look forward to every wednesday.

6. I originally read Dreadstar in Marvel's "Epic" magazine |
|
the short lived competitor to Heavy Metal. I was stoked when they were rereleased in traditional comic format.

I wish the recent EPIC relaunch hadn't fizzled out like it did. Then again, Marvel wasn't trying to do anything like the original series.

DNAgents is going to be reprinted in TPB form next year.
Man, I miss that series! What was the spinoff? CROSSFIRE or CROSSsomething? I've lost too many brain cells since that series was still going. That was as enjoyable, in a different way, as DNAgents.

11. dunno... it jumped from company to company for a couple of years |
|
I was reading it when Epic comics was publishing the title, then they went kaput. By the time DNAgents re emerged I was out of the comic buying phase of my early teen years and into the driving around in my car phase.
if it's the old Epic comic years in TPB form, I'll definitely look into it. I need a new pair of DNAgents 3D glasses for my 3D issue!

But almost all the books I read are being put into trade paperbacks right after their storyline ends, so I've switched (mostly) to TPBs. No ads and a better binding--what's not to like?
I do buy some of the smaller titles on a monthly basis so that they'll be able to stay afloat and then buy them in tpb later.
I read just about anything by Moore, Millar, Morrison, Bendis, Ellis, Gaiman & Vaughn.
Best new book: Ex Machina

4. I've been getting into Mark Millar lately |
|
I like his stuff, especially with the Ultimates. And he did a good job following up Ellis on The Authority.
I also like the relaunched TMNT and Tales of the TMNT, and I LOVE Girl Genius. One of the best out there. I'm a sucker for everything connected with Hellboy as well.
Plus I'm a big fan of Ellis, Moore, Morrison, and the like.
The series that got me into comics hardcore though, was Elfquest. That series really stands out from all others in my opinion.
The other series that is just outstanding in my book is Usagi Yojimbo. Anyone who likes comics needs to be reading that book.
My guilty pleasures are the X-titles. I read Astonishing X-men (which with Joss Whedon really lives up to the title), Uncanny X-men, X-men, Wolverine, and Excalibur, and I check out Exiles when it comes out in TPB.
I also will admit to taking advantage of the comfy chairs at borders or B&N and reading stuff like the Star Wars comics and various other TPBs instead of buying them, but I spend too much on comics as it is.

What a weird little phenomena that series turned into. Those books developed a whole fan culture unlike any other comic book up until then. I don't think there was a similar situation until Watchmen and then Sandman. Maybe I should add Frank Miller's Batman in there too.
I don't know if I'd like the series today. However, they were must-haves for me back in the day. I never was a hard-core member of Elfquest fandom; I was just on the edge--inside enough to RPG and hangout with other fans at Cons, however not in enough to be adopting and hanging out with real-life wolves or believing I was an Elf in a human body like some of the more extreme cases I knew.

Wendy Pini draws like no one else. Facial expressions, especially are great. Plus, the stories were really good. Hopefully, we'll see some more new stuff once the whole DC comics thing gets rolling.

from the guy who does Nodwick. That's a great book. never fails to raise a few laughs from me. I picked up the new one last night, along with District X, the Coup D'etat Authority TPB, The Marvels TPB (WOW!), and a few others.
Great sense of comic timing in PS238. I read it once and was totally hooked.

I'm going to have to get PS 238 when it goes into TPB, as I never seem to have any luck in finding individual issues and I'm too broke to pre-order books right now.

14. I stopped collecting in the early 90s |
|
I would have my local dealer hold any new comics for me, and when my habit started getting up to $50 a week or so for mostly craptacular new comics, I went cold turkey and stopped buying.
my favorite was always anything to do with Spider-Man... my oldest Spidey is Amazing Spider-Man #29, Never Step on a Scorpion.
My dad is a locksmith and years back, he opened up a safe for two old women and inside were a bunch of old Amazing Spider-Mans (from #32-83, but not all of them). They let him keep the comics, probably not realizing how much they were worth.

I make it a point to keep up with the following
Y: The Last Man (Really, REALLY good and highly recommended) Astonishing X-Men Ex Machina Swamp Thing :o The Losers
I don't make it a point to keep up with the following but regard w/ casual interest:
Ultimate Spider-man Birds of Prey Robocop (w/ Miller writing!)
Also, conclusion will be in stores this Wednesday, so I might just have to ignore it entirely

17. Ex Machina is probably my favorite new title of the last year |
|
Great book! I'm glad that there's a definite ending planned for the book way down the line. That tells me he's got the whole series at least sketched out in his mind.
I'm an old-time Swamp Thing fan. I missed the first few issues of the new series (kick to the head!) and I'm having to wait until I buy the new TPB to catch up.

Same writer, quality stuff.
I've got the first 29 issues archived on my computer and I can send them to you if you've got a decent connection.
