Nice garage sale find

When I see a garage sale, I'm always on the lookout for old-and-cheap Matchbox/Hot Wheels cars for my two sons. I stopped by a sale this afternoon and found no such cars, but I did find a handful of Heinlein paperbacks and a few Heinlein hardbacks. I asked about the price: 12 for a dollar!

I grabbed nine Heinleins and the three Herberts I didn't have. I don't have all the titles handy, because they're still in the trunk, but I was very pleased at the find. All of the books are in surprisingly good condition, despite some of them being 40+ years old.

2. I found the whole Dune series

at a garage sale a long time ago . I had never read it, or even heard of it at the time.I can not even remember how many times I have read it since, and I still have those dog eared and falling apart books!

3. Nifty!

The garage sale had a hardcover copy of Dune, but it was in pretty bad shape and was the exact same edition that I recently snagged from a book sale. Happily, the other books were in surprisingly good condition.

I went back the next day and spent another dollar to get the remaining books, and no one else seemed to have bought any. I'd have grabbed all of them the first day, but I only had a dollar with me. Anyway, I snagged:

As it turns out, I've never read any of these. I only read Dune for the first time a few years ago, and I've never read any Heinlein beyond the first chapter or two of To Sail Beyond the Sunset.

But 15 books for $2.00 is a pretty sweet deal as far as I'm concerned!

5. In my experience Heinlein is

either really good or really bad. Lots of Duers really like him but I find some of his stuff unreadable.

I liked the Lazarus books.

I got told off good a few years ago when I posted that I didn't like Heinlein. LOL

6. That 's why I only got a chapter or two into To Sail Beyond the Sunset

IIRC, the book begins with a naked young woman who remains naked at least as far as I read, and it's told from her POV.

At no time did I ever believe the narrative voice; it totally sounded like a middle aged man trying to sound like a nude babe.

More than a little creepy.


But, hey, the price is right, so I'll give it a shot. I've started on Starship Troopers, and I have to say that I'm impressed at how different the style is from its contemporaries. We'll see how things turn out...

7. It is a very weird and creepy book

and is one of the reasons I think Heinlein may have been a closet pedophile. He certainly was obsessed with nudism later in life.

His earlier books, the so-called juveniles are generally pretty good. He was a good storyteller for the most part, but there's a strong streak of racism and conservatism in him, that is covered up by the deification of him.

I attended the Heinlein bicentennial in Kansas City two years ago (he was born 07/07/07) and was very disturbed by the fawning and the near complete unwillingness to address his nut-case conservatism. Were he still alive he'd probably have a right-wing radio show.

Nonetheless, I would love to see more of his work turned into movies.
