Need help from someone familiar with old (1930-1950) SF ...

Years ago I read a book in which aliens were attempting to invade the Earth. I was thinking the aliens came from a planet around a burned-out star which was passing close to Earth, so this made me think of John Campbell's "Dark Star Passes". But I'm more than two-thirds of the way through this book (it doesn't bear up well) and I still haven't encountered the aliens with orange blood (who otherwise look just like humans!) and it doesn't seem I'm going to. Can anyone remember what story featured convincingly humanoid aliens with orange blood? They may have come from one of the outer planets, not another star, I can't recall.
