1. Very timely. We've been picking our wild blackberries, |
|
and are moving on to the elderberries.
I remember picking berries with my mother when I was the size of that kid in the blog story. Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries--they were major staples for us.
Thanks for the story.

2. Me too. Blackberries are a big part of late summer around here! |
|
This year I really got organized and froze about 25 lbs. for later.
Blackberry pie about December should be pretty nice!
Cheers!

3. I have an abandoned lot next to my home |
|
and this year, I trimmed the new blackberry growth back just enough to get to the good berries from last years runners. My daughter and I have picked about 6 gallons so far for baking up this week... I love blackberries!

In the SF Bay area, we had a huge fence about a third of a block long in our back yard. Covered with great producing vines.
One Sunday, M and I woke up to hear someone in the berry patch. We went out to find a Sausalito woman, dressed in her "To Church" finest, clipping away at our berries.
"You know something. Your landord mentioned to me last week taht i could stop by and help myself to some berries."
"Really" He did that?" We chorused.
"He sure did."
She continued blithely picking away, while we went back in the house laughing. The landlord had been dead three years, which in our small community should have been gossip she'd have heard at church.

7. Rule #1 when picking blackberries: |
|
Don't pick the red ones because the red ones are green.
Oh wait. That's rule #2.
Rule #1: Look around the field first and make sure there are no black bears in the area before you settle in for pickin'!
