Yesterday afternoon I gassed the ground hog burrows along the foundation of the house where the little creep had been digging down along the power service where it comes up to the meter.

I KNOW he was in there, I know I had scouted for burrow openings within 100 ft and had left him only 2 to move through. I spotted him grazing on the garden and I scared him into what was supposed to be his tomb. I set off a fumigant smoke bomb in both openings and covered them with flagstone weighted with large stones and sealed them with some soil when I saw smoke curling up and was sure each bomb hadn't snuffed out.

This noon I came around the corner of the house and I saw it. The STONE WAS ROLLED AWAY! I wasn't exactly thinking miracle at that moment. That marmot had not only slipped the surly bonds of every snare I set since August, an earthly tomb couldn't hold him, either!

The S.O. says not to take it too hard, this COULD be The Chosen One. The stone is rolled away; his tomb seemed completely empty; definitely risen from the grave. And I am not looking forward to his return.

I understand your problem. I have had the very same fight with similar results.

I ended up dumping bleach down the hole.

5. I thought about bleach and ammonia together...

Then I read about the chemistry of potential reactions and found out that depending on ratios of chemicals used, a by-product could be something that is a volatile rocket fuel. It didn't sound like something I should do with the borrows against a foundation.

Of course this was after they had a feast and wiped out my small garden in a few hour time period that I wasn't home! Think they even invited their twelfth cousins from ten miles away.

7. Rural and nodding....

In my neck of the woods....north central Vermont....the pest was a black bear. He came twice, tore up everything in the back yard and left with my favorite cylinder birdfeeder in his mouth. The animal kingdom is amazing.

We have possums, racoons (including one who rattles the door for cat food) and our version of a ground hog with armor-armadillos.

11. Read about a trap for rats on GardenWeb. It is a 5-gal. bucket

Half full of water, with sunflower seeds sprinkled on the surface. Got the seeds. Set it up. Next morning all the seeds were gone. I can only imagine a tall boar coon standing patiently at the bucket half the night, picking each seed out. We throw scratch feed out for our checkens, and attract rats. Just trying to be neighborly...

14. I can relate here in western Nebraska panhandle

We have a great neighbor but he doesn't do anything about the groundhogs. He has 1 section with them running amuck and this borders our land.

I have discovered that putting USED cat litter in their holes they go back to his side of the fence. If you have cats you might give it a try. The holes I filled 5 years ago are still full of cat litter.

At one time we had so many coming into our fields that we did poison them and of course there is always someone wanting to practice shooting and eager to shoot
