LOWELL -- UMass Lowell is launching a new Center for Public Opinion and will host the first debate between Democratic candidates vying to unseat U.S. Sen. Scott Brown, one day after the release of its first public opinion poll, Chancellor Marty Meehan said.
"We want the polling to be a student-driven project," he said at a Tuesday meeting with Sun editors and reporters. "Meaningful public-opinion centers are academic and they engage students."
The poll and the debate, scheduled for Oct. 4, are the results of a partnership between UMass Lowell and the Boston Herald.
Candidates scheduled to debate are Tom Conroy, Marisa DeFranco, Alan Khazei, Bob Massie, Herb Robinson, Elizabeth Warren and Setti Warren.
