brief mention in the WaPo "Reliable Source" (their "bold-faced names feature) http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/reliable-source/post/rem-retires--the-band-that-pioneered-a-new-way-to-be-rock-stars/2011/09/21/gIQAYoczlK_blog.htmlLike U2, R.E.M. crafted an identity as rocker-statesmen, actively promoting political and social causes — feminism, Burma, the environment, John Kerry .

1. hahha, i love how "John Kerry" is seen as a political/social cause |
|
i know they are probably referring to the 2004 campaign. but i see him as someone who represents something good we are still trying to get and he is continuing to work for.

I was just thinking that right this minute-- that , for me, our little group stays together not just because of JK himself , but also because of the political qualities that he represents, and because of the political sensibilities that most of us seem to share.

I love so many of their songs!- Losing My Religion, The One I Love and Stand and Shiny Happy People. Also a song of theirs was at the credits for the most excellent documentary, "Going Upriver"-I love how were really supportive of JK's campaign! And I agree with your assessment, MBS, totally. JK is such an inspiration! :)
