People that think ADD is a made-up disorder created to sell meds are assholes. |

1. Agreed. There should be a booth for them to sit in for an hour |
|
that reproduces the experience. Then let them get back to us

it could both be a real disorder, and there is a problem with overly prescribing. Happens with children and many people who don't have a good relationship with a psychiatrist and see only a general practitioner who isn't qualified to make such diagnoses. I think that is a big problem in the pharmaceutical industry. Happens when money is the motivator. And I don't say this with any menace or any disbelief that it is a very real disorder. I hope you understand that. Just trying to look at it from another point of view.

4. Just some food for thought -- I recently read that |
|
some cases of ADHD might be due to untreated sleep apnea. The anecdotal evidence is of children with ADHD who had tonsillectomies for another reason, who suddenly found themselves relieved of symptoms. If the ADHD is sometimes a result of exhaustion from never reaching deep sleep and/or never dreaming and/or never sleeping more than 2 or 3 minutes at a time, that might explain why Ritalin, which is a stimulant, settles people with ADHD. (Not to mention, that although correlation is not causation, the rise in the incidence of ADHD occurred about the time routine tonsillectomy went by the wayside.)
Again, strictly anecdotal, but I was surviving on a dose of a Ritalin relative, Nuvigil, because I was exhausted even after sleeping 10 to 12 hours. The day I got my C-Pap machine, I stopped the medication and haven't looked back. The C-Pap is hardly an elegant solution, but it works.
ADHD is real. It would be nice if some people could benefit from a simple and effective treatment.

6. FWIW - I had absolutely no idea that I had apnea - in fact, |
|
when I took my sleep study, I was concerned that my sleep was so normal no one would take my report of fatigue seriously!
As near as I can tell, it turns out about 2% of adult women and 6% of adult men have some form of sleep apnea. That explains why we are suddenly hearing so much about it.
It's not something to self-diagnose, but something to consider and discuss with your doctor.

had a hard time convincing him and his docs that he was falling apart and it was his sleep that was the problem. quite a time. it is being taken very seriously now, and the sleep clinics around here are boooooooming.

9. My nephew is soon to be looked at by a doctor about potential add/adhd |
|
Can you recommend some literature on the subject? Websites? Books?
I must admit I'm a bit apprehensive about medicating for this, but I'm admittedly very ignorant and would like to educate.
Thank you.
