A person can be misinformed and feel strongly about their unfounded beliefs without being insane. We're seeing it a lot on the right now days, but I think that can happen to people who we consider political allies as well.
However, I think we have to be careful to not go too far when, as the article says, we consider that mental illnesses may be a sane reaction to a society out of balance, i.e. a natural reaction to an inequitable society. I've run across a lot of people in my time who think that mental illnesses are not sicknesses. They think that those diagnosed as having a mental illness are merely non-conformists trying to break free from the constraints of an oppressive culture. That may be true in some cases, but certainly not all.
