Should I Become More Involved Online? |
|
My problem is that I currently feel alone and stuck in an environment with people I want nothing to do with. That will hopefully change in a few months, but that is the way it is for now. I come home everyday and read the fantastic posts here on DU and think, "Why can't I get to know these people? Why do I continue to look for kindred spirits in the "real" world and feel disappointed? Why not try and connect online?" But then I realize how impersonal chatting over a screen is, how distrusting I am of internet personas, and how hesitant I am to give out information about myself. Maybe I should just start by posting here more often? Any advice you can give is appreciated.

very enjoyable and fulfilling.
Yes, it is "virtual" but I always remind myself that I am communicating with a real person somewhere at their keyboard.
The contact is different, of course, but satisfying nevertheless, in my experience.
But then I realize how impersonal chatting over a screen is, how distrusting I am of internet personas, and how hesitant I am to give out information about myself
I wouldn't throw caution to the wind by any means - never give out personal information about yourself until you are very, very sure of the person you have contact with!
Good idea - just start posting in threads, maybe in the various groups that interest you, and slowly but surely you will find people you might develop a deeper connection with.

There is so much at DU! I've only been here since November and there are forums I haven't explored, people I'm just getting to know.
I have seen trainwrecks involving people who try to make "instant connections." On the other hand, I've friends that I met on line, developed a relationship with and wouldn't have missed it for the world.
Have fun, BPRD. :)
