I'm going to stop wearing my glasses |
|
I started out with cheaters, then went to bifocals and now I'm dependent on trifocals. The optical people just keep coming out with different lenses to make sure their profits stay high. Normal people don't wear glasses and it's time for me to stop using them as a crutch. It's true that I can't see well without them, but that just shows that I have to work at seeing properly. It's just a matter of good diet and exercise and a change in attitude and I'll be fine. I'll just have to learn to avoid situations where not being able to see is a problem. Therefore no more reading or any kind of close work.

the original post was aimed at all those people who keep telling us we don't really need our meds or that the meds are a scheme by Big Pharma to make money. Some problems can't be talked away or willed away!

I sure wish that a medication had helped me as well as my glasses do with helping me see clearly and comfortably without side effects!
On the meds debate I do see both sides....
If I had found one that truly helped me I would simply totally ignore any criticisms or attempts to belittle or shame usage. edit: (which is exactly what I do when people tell me I am weak and gullible for finding valuable support from Homeopathy and herbs at times! :-))

9. My post wasn't aimed at anyone who posts in this group. |
|
It was aimed at the Tom Cruises of the world. If you've found something that works for you, go for it regardless of the source. It doesn't matter if it's talk therapy, pills, light, electro-shock, magnets, herbs, chanting etc etc. As far as I can see, the more we learn about mental illness, the more we realize that we don't have all the answers. The most important new finding, IMO, is the realization that for some of us, depression is a life-long condition requiring life-long treatment. That's why I get irritated with healthy people telling us to taking our medicines because we might get "addicted".

10. Yes, I knew that you were talking about the "others" out there, hedgehog.. |
|
and understand your irritation so very well.
People who have never experienced serious and long-term mental health problems really do have no idea whatsoever, IMO.

7. Geesh, you had me worried for a moment |
|
Then I read down to post #3 and realized your OP was satire.
Don't let the Tom Cruises of the world get to you. It is people who have never had and/or don't understand mental health problems that say uninformed and cruel things like "just think positive" or "take vitamins and exercise". While doing those things can be helpful, they are no panacea. Genuine mental health problems require more than that. While they don't necessarily require medications, and might not require long-term medications, the idea of automatically ruling out meds is short sighted and possibly dangerous.

13. excellent point, but they are still trying to swindle you with glasses |
|
They'll try to sell you more poorly made but overpriced frames, with ultra-thin lenses, anti-reflective coating, color transition, cleaning supplies, and all kinds of garbage you don't need.
Sure you need the glasses, but that doesn't mean they aren't trying to maximize their profits.
Medicine is necessary and saves lives and makes life worth living for people every day and contributes to my income.
But Americans are still over-medicated and big Pharma is still paying me dividends and financing my 401K. Like the glasses, there is some basic stuff you need, and lots of crap you don't. Each person's experience will be different. Just keep in mind that every time you purchase drugs some of YOUR money might pay my rent.
Like parents jokingly tell me: You're old enough to do whatever you want, just as long as we're the beneficiaries in your life insurance plan! :P
