How much does a therapist really help? |
|
I'm finally at the point where I'm gonna pick up the phone and look for a therapist. Any tips on what I should be looking for and for those experienced, did therapy really help with your mental issues? I'm a male and I'm sure I want a female, although not sure why...I really hope this helps...

1. droopy asked basically the same thing in his OP |

I've seen therapy help alot of people, including myself. Check out my reply in his OP.
As far as what to look for- consider 1. availability - you want someone that can meet with you as you need - not too busy or over-scheduled 2. compatibility - you want someone you can talk and relate to. 3. afford-ability - someone that takes your insurance and you can afford.
For the most part, talking to someone almost always helps. IF it doesn't help, then find someone else. I've never met anyone that was worse off for going to therapy.

2. A goal-oriented therapist can help a great deal. |

I have been disappointed with therapists who passively guide me to examine my feelings and find my own solutions. I, too had sought out female therapists because stereotype or not, I thought I was more likely to find someone who was in tune with emotions. My most recent therapist, however, was a straight man, and he did wonders for me. He asked me why I was seeking help and what I hoped to accomplish. He then took the initiative to create a cognitive therapy plan for me (specifically Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy) and he kept me on track. He was an intern at a free walk-in center. :hi:

It doesn't matter why you would prefer a woman... if that'd make you more comfortable, then that's what matters. I'm seeing a pscychologist and it has helped a lot.
Good luck.
On edit: wow this is old... I hadn't noticed. I hope you have had luck with your first appointment(s)...
