| Spanish Civil War: Anyone see any parallels to our situation? |
|
I've been re-reading Orwell's "Homage to Catalonia" and reflecting on our current situation. The Nationalist uprising was an attempt to overthrow a moderate socialist/leftist government and, in turn, it opened the floodgates of political extremism on both sides. Does anyone see the Bush Administration's actions taking the same course here?

Is more like what would have happened if the military uprising of July 1936 had succeeded throughout Spain. Of course there are huge differences between contemporary American and 1930s Spanish society, although some parallels do exist between the Bushco Republican Party and the Insurgent coalition of the military, religious extremists and the fascistic falange. Sadly, what passes for the left in the USA doesn't hold a candle to the Popular Front.

You're right. The workers in America have become cowed and timid because of years of propaganda, lowered wages, and a poor economy. Additionally, workers in America have lost their political orientation.
