Looking for a history of India

actually, looking for a good book on the history of the Indian sub-continent...historical development of the area now stretching from the Mediterranean to Thailand and the development of the countries that were part of the Soviet Union on their Southern border...Turkmenistan etc...

Anyone can help? I've got plenty on specific countries such as Afghanistan but I'd really like to get one that gives a comprehensive overview of the political and historical development of the middle-east and Indian sub-continent.
