Yikes! Anyone Reading Anything ELSE Besides HP? Any "Black Company" Fans?

I'm reading this series now and it's sensational! Although (thankfully) much more adult than HP.

2. Not reading HP here

Although considering it, as my girlfriend gets seriously annoyed that adults obsess over HP and refuses to read any of it.

I just started Stephenson's "The Confusion". just a couple pages into it, though.

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell (Susanna Clarke)

Year of Wonders (Geraldine Brooks)
Basics of SCSI (don't ask.)
A couple of Neil Gaiman graphic novels

Having not read Black Company, I can't comment on it (though the reviews at Amazon lead me to believe that it may be similar to Feist's Serpentwar Saga? - mercenary troupes saving the world from elemental evil? or are the reviewers smoking bad things? ).

However, Don't write off HP as kids' stuff anymore.... This last one isn't something I'd give a young'un without lots of prep. (And this from someone who read valley of the Dolls as an elementary student.... whereby much is explained about my skewed outlook....)

11. Just finished confusion, started on System of the world

which just came out in paper back. I absolutely love this series.

I also just picked up Jonothan Strange and Mr. Norrell in paperback and will be reading that one next.

12. nearly done with Strange and Norrell

My girlfriend describes it as "Harry Potter For Adults" and in a way it is. It's definitely a great book to follow up the Baroque Cycle with, as it takes place about 100 years after that series ends, so there's some continuity in my reading. It tends to meander in the middle, but it's so entertaining, that's ok. I strongly recommend this one.

Really, you'd think they could have a HP forum - unless no one truly is reading anything else!

4. R.A. MacAvoy

Just started "A Trio for Lute," a trilogy combined into one big volume. The 3 books in the trilogy are "Damiano," "Damiano's Lute," and "Raphael."

I picked up an old used copy several months ago because I like some of MacAvoy's "Lens of the World" trilogy. I don't know about this one. It has some elements that are interesting, but I don't care much for the angel/devil/damiano triangle. I get enough bombardment from the mundane world's obsession with angels and devils to want them to populate my books, too. We'll see if MacAvoy can hold my interest here in spite of them.

5. The Black Company is one of my favorite series

When you are done, do yourself a favor and track down Cook's Dread Empire series. Unfortunately it is out of print now, but it is even better than TBC IMO.

The characters in it are not so obviosuly archetypical, nor are the situations so black and white. To be honest, though, I was introduced to the series late, and thus have not followed up on the latter books.

I'm reading "Water Sleeps" right now and there's only one left after that "Soldiers Live".

Yeah, that's why I love these books so much. They're real. The characters are complex and gritty and everything is grey.

9. Do you hapen to have a Black Co. book chronology?

I stopped reading last year when funds got tight and it became difficult to find BC books at the local used book stores (of course, most of those have gone out of business in the last year, too). I remeber that Croaker was killed.

Have you read any of the Garret, PI books? Well worth your time. Besides playing humorously with the cliches of fantasy literature, they're pretty good noir detective storis.

why can't an author finish a story in one book anymore????

I think Shadowmarch was wonderful and a good change from some of your formulaic books but I was hoping for more than 600 pages of prep for the next books

Right now I'm reading more Brust's Khaavren Romance books. I dug the Taltos series, so I figured I'd check it out. So far so good.
