Anybody else here read the Hunger Games trilogy? |
|
It's an amazingly engrossing series that inspires thoughts about society, governments and attitudes. I have one overall criticism of it though that I won't go into here because I don't want to drop any spoilers.

Recently read an article in the New Yorker about dystopian young adult fiction, which seems to be a burgeoning genre. The Hunger Games was favorably mentioned. Being a 40-something, I'm not usually a consumer of YA fiction, although I just finished Paolo Bacigalupi's 'Ship Breaker' (National Book Award finalist) and I'll be damned if I can tell what's YA about it. Really excellent book, and highly recommended.

2. I read them with my middle school book group last year. |
|
We loved them. My students "got" the obvious connections to modern reality tv, and I remembered Shirley Jackson's short story, "The Lottery." We were fascinated to read an interview with Suzanne Collins in which she linked the games to Greek Mythology and the labyrinth.
We pretty much took the books apart; our book group ended in June when school was over, but we'd ordered "Mockingjay" to be delivered in August, and we got together to discuss it that last week before the new school year.
Last year, the students in our after school book group were the only ones reading it; this year, EVERYBODY is in line for their turn. They can't get enough of Katniss.
What is your criticism? Don't be afraid of spoilers; this forum doesn't get many visits as it is. Just scroll down, so that those who don't want them can stop before they get there...........
Was it the conclusion, with the death/s, Katniss' surprising action, or her choice? Or perhaps, the direction the revolution took? Those were all fertile topics in our discussion group!
