Tad Williams -Memory, Sorrow and Thorn

Just to get a non-Harry Potter thread going!

Who's read it? What did you like about it? What didn't you like?

I got way sucked into it, but have had problems picking it back up because I got really affected by what the characters were going through. Sort of a sad series, actually. But really good. I think it's up there with the Martin series.

I find that Williams really has the knack of infusing his characters with such vivid and recognizable qualities, that sometimes you dread the appearance of the horrifying characters and get your heart broken by the heroic ones.

I have the new Williams book, haven't started it yet though. I've really enjoyed everything I've read by him.

But just had to chime in, as Tad Williams is worth it!

I've really enjoyed Williams writing - both his fantasy and sf. I particularly liked his Memory, Sorrow and Thorn series. A big, sprawling coming of age story in the classic fantasy genre.

I thought that War of the Flowers was good as well. I haven't had a chance to pick up Shadowmarch yet, although I'm looking forward to it.

3. I finished Shadowmarch recently.

One critique you will hear about it is that it's too similar plot-wise to A Game Of Thrones by Martin. This is true, but since it's a Williams story, who cares? it's a good book. Although, I will say that since the plots ARE similar, I find it a little harder to recall details of the story without confusing it with something that happened in AGOT. I really like the treatment of the non-human folk, though. Not as politically complex as Martin, and definitely full of Williams' signature characters.

4. just finished Shadowmarch as well

good book but I'm just getting so tired of these trilogies and series with no freaking resolutions in sight

5. That's whats great about Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

one thick-ass book, but it's a complete story. not part one of anything.

although it doesn't rule out sequels, I suppose, but it stands on its own.

Harry Potter for Adults. well, and history-literate yong adults.

6. I've read just about everything except that.

To the horror of many other Tad Williams fans :) My favorite is the Otherland series. I plan on reading Memory, Sorrow and Thorn at some point.
