My sweet old aunt keeps sending me stuff, and here is a response I gave her and everyone on her reply list. I'm posting it to reflect the nonconfrontational tone I take with family I am trying to remain close with.

Claim: Actor Denzel Washington made a large donation to the Fisher House Foundation after visiting Brooke Army Medical Center.

Status: Multiple:

Denzel Washington visited Brooke Army Medical Center and made a substantial donation to the Fisher House Foundation: True.

Denzel Washington whipped out his checkbook and "wrote a check out for the full amount (for a new Fisher House) right there on the spot": False.


It’s a wonderful story, and I think the original (reality) is better than the email fiction. People who originate these emails (I know it isn’t any of you) lose some of their credibility when they stretch the truth – it becomes obvious they have another agenda.

Comparisons to other people are useless because they don’t bother to check on private donations these people make to other (and maybe the same) worthwhile causes.

Frankly, I think it is shameful that our govt places care of these veterans and families in need on such a low priority while at the same time they hand out tax cuts to people and corporations who are not in need. That’s why half the country doesn’t want to be identified with this “compassionate conservatism.”
