I finally had time to play with the serger and watch the video. I have made a few seams, but have not re-threaded the machine yet (still using the thread that came in it!) So far it does not seem too tricky..it did take me a while to figure out how to sew a standard (5/8 inch) seam allowance. I think I will sew a top today and see if I can find a serger class to learn the more complicated techniques. Thanks to all of you for your suggestions and encouragement.

I found that practice is the best way to master using the serger.
Until you get comfortable with threading, did you know you can tie new color of thread to the loopers only instead of rethreading from scratch? Make that cut and knot the threads after the tension dials, not before it.
Once you get the basics down, then there is a whole new world of fun stuff you can do with the serger!

threading..it says to thread in the exact order they give me but I am only low on thread on the first 2 spools.. do I need to "un thread" 3 and 4 to re thread 1 and 2?

My experience has been if the needles are threaded already, then you could get away with changing the loopers only as long as the needles are out of the serger (foot up).
Sorry this answer took a couple of days. If you need anything, PM me!
