Part 1 and 2 are still on the main DIY page.

A lot has happened since the last post. The floor is now level, insulated and covered in 3/4" tongue and groove plywood. Insulation, framing, electric are all done. Sheetrock is 90% done and most seams are taped and spackled first coat or better. I'll try to take you step by step through the process in photos.

I tried to keep all the pics below 100K. I have decided to send photobucket a few bucks for providing me a place to host all the pics in this thread and others.


Old closet walls removed and room gutted down to the original post and beam.

Are you going to leave those original cross tie beams exposed up by the ceiling?

4. Looks like it, the way it's framed

Just make sure the beams are finished where they enter the ceiling material with a little frame. It should probably be as simple as a 1x1 butt jointed frame around the beam, stained dark, but it makes one hell of a difference. Been there, done that.

Also, if there's going to be a way to mount a ceiling fan on one of those cross beams, make sure you run that wiring before you close up the walls. Been there, didn't do that. Woops. Pain in the ass to do it later.

It's starting to take shape, though. It's kind of a pity there was no way to expose the post and beam construction, but you need to insulate the place on the exterior to do that, and it would have made the shape of the room too weird to support furnishing it.

6. Sheetrocked right around those cross beams.

Patched with patching plaster. I'm not putting any frame around them because some of them twist where they got through the drywall. There is a frame around them beneath the drywall if I decide to frame them later. I hop
Ceiling fan box and wiring are installed.

Your right about the post and beam but I needed the insulation. I insulated between the beams and did a second layer in the new framing. All that insulation really cut down on the noise from below. And it'll save a ton on heating and cooling costs.

5. Yup. The beams will be exposed.

They are structural and couldn't be removed even if we wanted too. We didn't want to though. I think they add a lot of character to the room.

They look terrific. I'd hate to see them get hidden!
