Steps to take to bump out a room.

I have an enclosed front porch in the front of my house. We hardly use it because (a) it's too hot in summer and (b) too cold in the winter. I'd like to rip it down and bump out my living room.

Sooooo, where to begin. Hire an architect first? Call a builder first? How does one begin the process. Any information, tips, ideas are most welcome.

1. There is really no need to

hire and architect unless you relly want to spend the money. First you will want to write down ideas you would like to see in the addition and do some homework (Magazines-Websites). Then call a few different building contractors. Most contractors will help you with the design such as what type of footings needed, electrical and heating requirements. Contractors will also submit the drawings to the building inspections department for approval.

I sure don't want to spend extra money if I don't have to.

Seems like a pretty striaght forward thing to me... I have an eclosed porched. I want to knock out the interior wall of my living to gain 6 feet from the porch. Thanks.. I'll be calling several builders.

i have no money, but I'm still managing to re do my space on a REAL tight budget. i love thrift stores and salvage yards :)

I read an article in a magazine and took a quiz on feng shui. It confused me :silly:

We don't have any money either but, we have a very low mortage. 800.00 a month

My neighborhood when we bought here (long story) I really didn't buy this I only signed for my son - then he didn't want it and ..... shit happens and I got stuck. Anyway, most home were fixer uppers and cheap. The last few years they've either sold or owners passed on and new people are buying and fixing the houses.

Two examples: one house 2 doors away needs a ton of work, no driveway and no property to install a driveway, tiny yard. Sold for $215k. The one that blew me away was imho a tear it down - on the verge of condemnation. This was a true WRECK inside and out. The elderly man died the kids sold the house someone bought it as is for 250k and are fixing it now... so far they've dropped another 100k in fixing and they are no where near done. They still have the entire inside to do and any landscaping might want.
